The Advanced Placement Program

Every student in our secondary school takes AP level courses. We do not stream students into separate regular and advanced tracks. Our curriculum is designed so that every student is prepared for university level work and supported to meet it.

A Structured Pathway

Preparation begins in Levels I and II, where Pre-AP courses build the knowledge, discipline and study habits that AP requires. In Levels III and IV, students choose from our AP course offerings, which currently include AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Physics 1 and AP Psychology. We are committed to continually enhancing our program and expanding our AP offerings.

As part of our commitment to every student, each student writes one AP examination in Grade 11 and one in Grade 12, with the cost covered by the school. Students may choose to write additional AP examinations.

What AP Means at University

AP examinations are scored from 1 to 5. A score of 4 or 5 generally earns credit at Canadian universities, and many American universities also accept a 3. A strong result can earn a university credit or an exemption from a first year course. This allows students to move directly into second year courses, make room for electives or a second major, or lighten their first year course load. Policies vary by university and faculty, and we guide each student through the rules of the institutions they are considering.

Part of a Coherent Whole

AP is the natural culmination of a curriculum built on critical thinking, advanced problem solving and in depth study. It follows the IB Middle Years Programme and completes a demanding, coherent path from the Intermediary Panel to graduation.
