Grades 6 to 8 are the critical years. Students are ready for leadership, for freedom balanced by trust, and for the independence that comes with higher expectations. La Citadelle meets them with structure, challenge and the guidance of educators who instruct and mentor. It is an ideal time for families to join us, and a defining stage in the student each child becomes.

The IB Middle Years Programme, Standard for Every Student

La Citadelle is an authorized IB World School, and the IB Middle Years Programme is part of every student’s education from Grade 6 to Level II, included in tuition. The MYP brings an internationally recognized framework to everything students learn. They inquire, connect ideas across disciplines and apply their knowledge to the world, and their work is assessed against clear, consistent criteria that define excellence. Combined with our advanced bilingual curriculum and a third language, the MYP creates an education of rare depth and distinction.

An Education That Grows With Your Child

Grades 6 and 7 | Higher Expectations
Students enter the MYP and take on a broader, more demanding timetable. They learn to manage their time, organize their work and take ownership of their results, with their teachers guiding each step.

Grade 8 | Reaching Ahead
Every student begins secondary school credit courses through our Reach Ahead program, earning credits in Grade 9 Mathematics and French and beginning other Grade 9 courses. Students enter secondary school with a head start and the flexibility to pursue an ambitious program.

An Academically Advanced French Program

La Citadelle teaches French as a first language, preparing students for the dual language requirements of the Secondary Panel. Students meet high academic expectations in literary study, oral expression and formal writing, alongside English, also studied as a first language, and their third language, Mandarin or Spanish.

In Grade 8, students begin secondary school French, completing their Grade 9 French credit. This foundation prepares them for the DELF, the internationally recognized diploma of French proficiency awarded by France’s Ministry of Education, which students complete at the B2 level and beyond from Level II through Level IV. Students of every language background are welcome, and our Francisation program provides a structured pathway into the bilingual curriculum.

Balance That Keeps Students Engaged

Balance is the key to sustained engagement. Each day brings a variety of classes taught by specialist educators: languages, mathematics, the sciences, humanities, technology and MYP Design, visual arts, music, choir and band, drama, physical education and health. Study periods and academic club periods are built into the timetable, so students consolidate their learning and pursue their interests within the school day. This array of courses keeps students continually stimulated and challenged.

A Day Designed for Growth

The school day extends until 4:30 p.m., included in tuition. Academic support is part of every day, with educators available to guide students as they consolidate their learning. The end of the day brings social time, clubs and sports, giving every student a place to belong, whether on a team, in a club or simply connecting with friends across grade levels. Older and younger students support one another, and peer tutoring builds both confidence and community.

Educators Who Instruct and Mentor

Our educators know each student well. They instruct with expertise and mentor with care, guiding students through the important changes of these years in time management, organization, study skills and wellbeing. These life skills are developed alongside academic achievement, so every student has the guidance needed to keep moving forward.

Confidence, Character and Independence

The Intermediary years are when a child’s character begins to take its lasting shape. Supported by educators who know them and families who believe in them, students discover who they are as learners and as young people. They develop the confidence to voice their ideas, the self-discipline to see their commitments through, and the maturity to take responsibility for their choices.

With each year, students carry more of their education in their own hands. They plan with purpose, work with care and take quiet pride in what they achieve through their own effort. By the end of Grade 8, they hold the foundation of the IB Middle Years Programme and the habits of an independent learner. They enter our Secondary Panel ready for its rigour, where every student takes AP level courses within an accelerated, university bound academic program. What families come to see is a young person who is capable, self-assured and genuinely engaged in their education, ready to meet the next chapter with independence and with joy.
